# What is the underlying formula used to calculate the default range in Renko charts for a script, given that it doesn't align with the conventional ATR14 method?

## Short answer

The default brick size uses the Caveman algorithm , not the conventional ATR14 method. This algorithm analyses 300 aggregated bars of data on your chart (approximately one year for daily charts and 5 hours for minute charts) and determines the default value.

The default range varies depending on the instrument you view.
