# What are market-wide circuit breakers?

## Short answer

Market-wide circuit breakers temporarily stop trading activity when the market falls or rises rapidly beyond set limits. These circuit breakers trigger based on the movement of either the BSE Sensex or the Nifty 50, whichever breaches the limit first.

The index-based market-wide circuit breaker system applies at three stages of index movement in either direction: 10%, 15%, and 20%.
