# What is transmission of shares after death?

## Short answer

Transmission of shares is the transfer of shares from a deceased shareholder to their legal heir(s). Unlike voluntary share transfers, transmission of shares is a legal requirement that occurs when a shareholder passes away.

The company processes the transmission when you forward the necessary documents to them. Once the company registers the transmission of shares, the legal heir(s) entitled to the transmission becomes the company's shareholder, gains all shareholder rights, and becomes subject to all shareholder liabilities.
